As Labor Day Weekend is drawing to a close, it feels like a good time to summarize what went down on this long weekend.
Friday I got out of work early (woohoo!) and headed to the park where I pounded out 11 miles nonstop – my farthest distance yet! The full 13.1 is so close I swear I can taste it.
Saturday and Sunday consisted of family-type events. Saturday we attended Lawrence’s cousin Mark’s wedding in South Jersey. It was a fun and beautiful wedding, and a great reminder of how warming it is to be welcomed into such a large, close-knit family. Lawrence’s mom even dragged me into the family photo with them, which was a very sweet feeling. 🙂
Sunday we met up with my friend Jen’s circle of family and friends at a Chinese restaurant to celebrate her son, Julian’s, baptism. Fatness ensued, and it was great to meet her immediate family and close friends. The weekend trend of “warm” and “welcoming” continued there, as well. Afterward Lawrence and I browsed a nearby Big Lots store and actually found a lot of really nice furniture for super cheap. When we finally get around to buying a new couch, I definitely want to look there. Who knew Big Lots had good furniture? In my middle school years, I used to peruse the local Big Lots with my friends before/after we went to the movie theater next door. We usually bought goofy toys and candy, so I guess I never realized they carried “real” stuff… sorry, Big Lots. No harm, no foul!
The best way to summarize how we celebrated Labor Day today is to say, “It’s exactly what I wanted to do, but exactly what I didn’t think we’d do.” I was really hankering for some good cookout food, but because as of last night no one established any real solid plans, I figured we would just lay low and stay in today. Luckily, things fell together and a group of us (Travis, Jim/Colleen, John/Sheena, Kevin/Carla, and Jes) grilled and played volleyball at a waterfront park in Cartaret. I ate way too many hot dogs, realized I don’t suck quite as badly as I thought I did at volleyball, and had some good laughs with great people. Can’t ask for much more than that!
Here are a couple of my favorite things from this week:
- WIRELESS EARBUDS – A few weeks ago an Amazon promo code was circling around the office for $1 (originally ~$35) wireless earbuds. I’d been meaning to buy some for my upcoming race so the timing for these little earbuds really was perfect. The earbuds arrived mid-week and I tested them out on my 11 mile (11 miles! Yes!!!) run. I have to say I judged the book by the cover with these little guys… they looked super generic and I kind of thought they’d be, I’ll say it, crappy. Boy, was I wrong. Their functionality, quality and wearability all went above and beyond my expectations. And for $1, you really can’t go wrong… although it looks like the word spread and they are now out of stock 😦
- CHOCOLATE ALMOND MILK – Friday night after my long run I was hit with a random craving for chocolate almond milk. I stopped by Target and picked up some unsweetened vanilla almond milk and a bottle of Hershey’s syrup and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Granted you don’t dump in a crap ton of chocolate syrup, this really is a healthy way to get your sweet creamy fix, as well as your daily calcium… without a ton of calories. I loooove milk and used to drink a ton of it, but I noticed it makes me break out so I’m stoked that I now have a healthy, lactose-free alternative.
- SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE – Last night Lawrence and I watched the Shaun the Sheep movie and it really was so cute and heartwarming. I cried at least four times, no shame in that. I don’t want to give away any of the plot, but I’ll just say that the movie really touches on the importance of having a strong, loving, anchored family as well as following your heart and being true to yourself. A big theme is also the whole “the grass is always greener on the other side” concept. Definitely worth a watch… you know a “kids movie” is good if it makes you have a good ol’ cry!
Alright, well that’s all for now. Goodnight!
